Waves Flashcards
What do waves do
Transfer energy waves without transferring matter
What is a transverse wave
Vertical wave that is perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
What is a longitudinal wave
Horizontal wave that is parallel to direction of energy transfer
What is the frequency
Number of complete waves that pass a point every second
Waves ripple practical
- Measure distance of 10 waves and divide by 10 to get wavelength
- Use equation to calculate speed of waves
- Change the frequency of dipper to get more waves and repeat
- p.d should always be the same each time
Electromagnetic spectrum
Radio waves
Microwaves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultra violet
X rays
Gamma rays
What happens to frequency as you go along spectrum
Increases
What happens to wavelength as go down spectrum
Decreases
What are radio waves used for
Communications
What are micro waves used for
Heat - thermal energy
What is reflection
When light reflects off materials at same angle of incedise
What is refraction
When light enters a new material and changes direction and speed when going through
Angle of incedise and refraction
Both equal to each other
What materials absorbs energy the best
Matte black materials
