Waves Flashcards
Electric field oscillates in what plane
Horizontal (x - z ) plane
Magnetic field oscillates in which plane
Vertical (x-y) plane
Polarised light is what
Light that operates in only one plane
Unpolarised light
Light waves are at random angles to each other
What type of waves can be polarised
Only TRANSVERSE waves can be polarised
What polarisation can pass through the polariser
Polarisation that is perpendicular to the lines/bars that make up the polariser.
Lines/bars makes object reflective in that plane, so transmission only occurs when at right angles.
Malus’ Law
Gives an explanation for angles other than 0 and 90.
Unpolarised passed through polariser, then passed through analyser. Transmission axis ( axis that allows light to pass through the Polaroid) analyser is rotated through an angle when compared to the polariser.
Malus law inverse square
Intensity of the beam is proportional to the square of the amplitude.
