Waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
A movement of energy by which the energy moves the waves
What is an amplitude, wave length and frequency of a wave?
The amplitude is how tall the wave is, wavelength is how long the wave is from one point to the other and frequency is how many times a wave passes by
What is the wavelength and frequency measured with?
Wavelengths are measured with metres and frequency is measured by seconds or Hertz (Hz)
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave that is displaced at the right angle to the direction of the wave
What is a longitudinal wave?
When the wave is displaced parallel to the direction of the wave
What’s the wave equation?
Speed (V) = Frequency (f) X wavelength(Y)
Core practical ripple tank
- Set up the ripple tank placing a large sheet of paper under it
- Pour water to a depth of about 5mm in the tank
- Adjust the height of the wooden rod so that it just touches the surface of the water
4.Switch on the overhead lamp and the electric motor
5.Adjust the speed of the motor to produce low frequency water waves - Adjust the heigh of the lamp so that the pattern of the waves can be seen clearly on the white sheet
- Count the number of waves passing through given in seconds
- Calculate the speed of the waves using the wave equation
Measuring waves in a solid
Measuring the frequency speed and wavelength of a wave through a metal rod
- Suspend a metal rod horizontally using clamp stands and rubber bands
- Hit one end of the road with a hammer holding a smartphone with a frequency app near the rod and note the peak frequency
- Measure the length of the road and write it down the wavelengh will be twice the length of the rod
What is refraction
It’s when the wave passes through a medium and bends
How does refraction happen?
It refracts because the wave travels at a medium and there’s a change in the speed of light between the two materials
Examples of longitudinal waves
Sound waves and seismic waves
Examples of transversial waves
Light, seismic waves and ripples
What’s in the refracted wave example
Glass block with the normal in the model and an incident ray going through with the refracted ray inside and an emergent ray as it leaves
What’s reflection?
When a light bounces off a material
