Waves Flashcards
What are the two types of waves and what do they do
Longitudinal -Particles vibrate in the same direction as the energy transfer
Transverse-Particles vibrate perpendicular to the energy transfer
Give an example of a longitudinal and transverse wave
Longitudinal -Sound
Transverse-Water and Light
What is the definition of wavelength
Wavelength is the distance from one wave to the same point on the next wave.
What is the definition of frequency ,the symbol and what it’s measured in
Frequency is the number of waves that pass in one second and has the symbol f and is measured in Hertz (Hz)
What is the definition of reflection
When a wave bounces off something
What is the two properties of EM Spectrum
They travel at the speed of light
They are all transverse waves
They do not need particles to travel
What is diffraction
Diffraction is when waves can bend around corners and past obstacles
What is the period
The period of a wave is the length of time for one wave to go past
List the EM spectrum in order
Radio,Microwave,Infrared,Visible,
Ultraviolet,X-Rays and Gamma Rays
What is Refraction
The change of direction of a wave when travelled from one medium to another
