Waves Flashcards
What type of wave is light and water?
Transverse
What is a transverse wave?
It means that energy lives from at right angles from the oscillations
Give an example of a longitudinal ray, and what does it mean?
Sound. Energy moves the same direction as the oscillations.
What type of wave is sound?
Longitudinal
What is a peak?
The highest point of an oscillation
What is amplitude?
The maximum displacement from the peak/trough to the undisturbed level
What is wavelength?
Distance between peak to peak or trough to trough.
How is frequency portrayed on a wave machine?
The amount of troughs/peaks shown.
What is the equation for wave speed?
Wave speed(m/s) = wavelength(m) * frequency (Hz)
What is the wave speed of a wave with a frequency of 14 Hz and a wavelength of 4m?
56 m/s
If a wave has a wavelength of 250 m and a wave speed of 3500 m/s, what is its frequency?
14 Hz
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
What is wave speed measured in?
Metres per second (M/S)
What is the speed of light?
3*10^8m/s or 300,000,000 m/s
What is the order of the rainbow?
Red orange yellow green and blue indigo violet
What is specular reflection?
When the surface that light reflects off is smooth, and it all goes into your eyes. If it is bumpy, it is diffuse scattering.
Are images in mirrors virtual? And what does virtual mean?
Yes. Virtual means they looks like they are behind the mirror
How do filters work?
They absorb all other colours except the colour of the filter
If you look at a white light through a red filter what will you see?
Red
If you look at a cyan light through a green filter what will you see?
Green
If you look at magenta through a green filter, what will you see?
Black
A ray of light bounces off a mirror, but the light isn’t as strong, why?
Some of it is absorbed by the mirror
Can light travel through vacuums?
Yes
Why can’t sound travel through vacuums?
Sound needs particles to vibrate and thus create sound.
What do lenses do?
They use refraction to spread out or focus light.
In refraction, which way does light bend?
Towards the normal
Where does light first hit in your eye?
The retina
Why is sound quickest in solids?
As the particles are closer together so the vibrations are quicker.
What is the speed of sound in air?
330 m/s
How do you find the speed of sound using an echo?
Distance * 2
______________
Times
Barnabas hits together two wooden blocks down an alleyway 160m long, it takes approximately 1.2 seconds for the sound to echo back. What was the speed of sound?
160*2
________= 267 m/s
1.2
Ethan hits together two wooden blocks down an alleyway 240m long, it takes approximately 4 seconds for the sound to echo back. How many m/s below the speed of sound is the result?
240 * 2
————- = 120. 330 - 120 = 210
4
Ethan is stupid.
Assuming it is travelling through a vacuum, how long will it take for light to travel 3,000,000m?
0.01 seconds
Ibrahim wears 3D glasses (half red, half blue) however he is confused when half of his blue physics book is normal and the other is black. Why does this happen?
Because the blue side of the glasses will reflect the blue book, however the red side will absorb it, leaving black(the absence of light)
