Waves Flashcards
What is the difference between a transverse and longitudinal wave.
Transverse: perpendicular to energy transfer.
Longitudinal: parallel to energy transfer.
Give one example of a longitudinal and transverse wave.
Longitudinal: Sound waves
Transverse: EM waves
What is the formula for time period?
T = 1/f
What is the formula for frequency?
f = 1/T
OR
f = n/t
What is the formula for wavelength?
w = v/f
What is the formula for wave speed?
v = fw
What is the Doppler effect?
When the wavelength and frequency of a sound wave change, but the speed of the wave stays the same.
What will happen to the pitch of a sound moving away from you?
It will become lower
Why would the pitch of a sound change as an object moves towards you?
The wavefronts would be squashed closer together as the object approaches.
