Q

Describe features of resultant wave set up by two waves travelling in opposite directions.

A

Resultant wave is a stationary wave with twice the amplitude of each individual wave.

The waveform does not advance and there is no transfer of energy.

The particles vibrate about their equilibrium positions with maximum amplitude at antinodes and zero at nodes.

All particles between two nodes are in phase, and in anti-phase on opposite sides of nodes.

Q

What is meant by progressive wave?

A

It is a wave in which it travels from one point to another with a transfer of energy along its direction of travel.

(Transverse waves and longitudinal waves are part of progressive waves)
