waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
the movement of energy from one place to another
Whats the rest position?
when the particles aren’t vibrating and are in an undisturbed position
Whats the wavelength?
the distance covered by a full cycle of a wave
How is the wavelength measured?
from trough to trough or peak to peak
What is the trough?
the lowest point below the rest position
What is the peak?
the highest point above the rest position
Whats the amplitude?
the maximum displacement of a point of a wave from its rest position ( lowest trough and highest peak)
How do you find the wave speed?
frequency x wavelength
How do you find the wavelength?
speed / frequency
How do you find the frequency?
speed / wavelength
Whats a transverse wave?
when the direction of the wave is perpendicular to the direction of vibration
Whats a longitudinal wave?
when the direction of the wave is parallel to the direction of vibration
Whats first on the electromagnetic spectrum?
gamma ray
Whats last on the electromagnetic spectrum?
radio
Whats the order of the electromagnetic spectrum?
gamma ray, x ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, microwave and radio
