Wave Vocab Flashcards
Frenquency
The number of cycles a wave completed in a period of time
Period
The interval between successive occurrences of the same state in oscillatory or cyclic phenomenon such as mechanical vibrations
Wavelength
A distance between successive crests of a wave especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave
Crest
The point on a wave with the maximum value of upward displacement with a cycle
Trough
Is the opposite of a crest so the minimum or the lowest point in a cycle
Amplitude
Is the maximum displacement or distance moved by a point on a vibrating body or wave
Longitude wave
Longitude waves are waves which the displacement of the medium is in the same direction or as is the opposite direction
Electromagnetic wave
The range of wave lengths of frequencies over which electromagnetic radiations extends
Compression wave
A longitude wave such as a sound wave propagated by the elastic compression
Rarefaction wave
Is the reduction of any items density the opposite of compression
Reflection wave
Is the change in the direction of a wave front returns
Refraction wave
Of waves involves a change in the direction of waves as they pass from one medium to another
Diffraction wave
Occurs when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit it is defined as the bending of a wave
