Wave Properties Flashcards
Describe what a wave is and what it can do
A wave is a regular disturbance which can carry energy without matter.
Describe the movement of particles in a longitudinal wave
The particals move backwards and forwards along the direction in which the wave is travelling
Describe the movement of particles in a longitudinal wave
The particals move backwards and forwards along the direction in which the wave is travelling
Describe the movement of particles in a transverse wave
The particals move at right angles along the direction in which the wave is travelling
An example of a longitudinal wave
Sound/earthquake waves
+ (ultra sound and infra sound)
An example of transverse waves
Light, micro, radio, water wave
What’s does a wave do
A wave transfers energy from one place to another
Model of a wave, what is the top of a wave called
Peak or creast
What is the distance from the middle of a wave to the crest or trough called
Amplitude
What is the bottom of a wave called
Trough
What does sonar stand for
Sound
Navigation
And
Ranging
(SONAR)
Frequency definition
Number of waves that are produced by a source every second
Period definition
The time taken for a complete wave to be produced by the source is called period
Or
The time taken for a wave to pass a point
Diffraction definition
It’s the bending of a wave around an object or when passing through a gap.
Diffraction definition
It’s the bending of a wave around an object or when passing through a gap.
True or false? Longer wavelengths diffract mor than shorter wavelengths
True
