Wave Particle Duality Flashcards
What are EM waves produced by?
oscillating electric charges
What are EM waves?
-transverse waves
-consist of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that are perpendicular to each other
-at the same frequency
Why does the permeability constant exist ?
due to the magnetic flux density produced as a result of a current-carrying conductor in free space
What does the permittivity of free space relate too?
related to the electric field strength due to a charged object in free space
What is the circuit diagram for Hertz’s radio waves experiment?
(radio waves experiment)

How is the spark created in the detector?
(radio waves experiment)
-when switch is closed, the induction coil produces a high voltage across gap
-spark causes radio waves to be produced
-waves propagate through the air to the detector
-the EM waves induce a voltage in detector causing spark
What is observed when a metal plate is placed between the transmitter and the detector?
(radio waves experiment)
-no spark
-because the plate prevented the waves from reaching the detector
What happens when a concave metal plate is placed behind the detector?
(radio waves experiment)
-the detector spark became stronger because the radio waves were focused by plate back onto detector
How did Hertz prove that the radio waves produced in his experiment were plane polarised?
-
