Wave Motion And Geometrical Optics Flashcards
Mechanical waves
Require a medium to travel, ex. water waves, sound waves
Electromagnetic waves
Waves that travel by vibrating electric and magnetic fields.
Transverse wave
Vibrates perpendicular to the direction of the waves motion, ex. electromagnetic waves, S-waves
Longitudinal wave
Vibrates in the same direction, or parallel to, the direction of the waves motion, ex. sound waves, P-waves
Amplitude
The maximum displacement of the medium. Depends on how it is generated, but not on its speed.
Constructive interference
Wave displacements are in the same direction.
Destructive interference
The superposition of waves with equal but opposite amplitudes.
Diffraction
The bending of a wave around a barrier
Concave: Object beyond centre of curvature
Real, smaller, inverted
Concave: Object is at the centre of curvature
Real, same size, inverted
Concave: Object is between centre of curvature and focal point
Real, inverted, larger
Concave: Object is at focal point
No image
Concave: Object is inside focal point
Virtual, erect, larger
Concave mirror images
Virtual, smaller, erect
Light passes from low density to high density
Slows down and bends towards normal
