watsonian behaviourism Flashcards
behaviourism as a school of thought, how was it different from the previous schools of thought
extremely radical, disregarded the existence of mind and mental processes, only and only focused on observable behaviour
what was the core value of behaviourism and how has it been reflected in the outlook of behaviourism towards psychology as a science
positivism, positivistic view of how behaviour should be studied
what was the name of the paper given by watson that formally set the foot for behaviourism.
what was the definition and goal of psychology as asserted by watson in that paper
psychology as the behaviourist views it (1913)
definition: psychology is the scientific study of observable behaviour
goal: the only reason why behaviour should be studied is for the description, prediction and control of it
watson was known to be a very harsh critic of the previous psychologies, what were those criticisms
hints: tradition, subject matter, problematic methodology. human and practicality
previous psychologies wanted to hold tradition with science
mentalistic processes should not be studied, feeling, thought, mind and consciousness
introspection is problematic because it pays too much heed to mental processes
human centered: in the end we are animals then why is so much attention being given to mental processes
not practical: thoughts padh ke aap na toh usko describe kar sakte ho na hi predict or control
watson was obsessed with experimentation wasn’t he then what were his core understanding of the methodology that he was deploying
hint:
REDR
radical empericism: glandular secretions muscle movements
only what is experienced by the five senses
determinism: everything is caused by other factors( a core value of positivism)
environmentalist: sab kuch environment mein hai
reductionism: S-R relation
environment mein hai sab kuch
universal laws and generalizations
elaborate on the method of watson
-observable behaviour
if a rats mind is not given importance in a study why is the mind of human considered
the methods suggested by him were
- observation
- conditioned reflex
-mental tests as a way to quantify mental processes
-verbal report
watsonian work on personality
personality is because of the habit system
we are born with the potential of unlearned responses
- some responses get conditioned and reinforced
- due credit should be given to the fact that he talked about the influence of the environment
watsonian views on learning
-learning s-r responses
-conditioned responses
-
watsonian views on emotions
-heridetray responses
-children only have 4 emotion
love, fear, rage
- fear is evoked by something unexpected and uncertain and loss the sudden loss of something/ support
- love is stroking
- rage is experienced when a goal directed behaviour is blocked
watsonian views on sensation
perception and thought and speech
what were watson’s contribution to the discipline
he brought a more systematic approach to the study of psychology
- brought in experimentation as a method
- he brought about the practicality of the discipline
-his later work came handy in behavioural therapy
critique watson on his work
hint: - introspection
-observable shift
- biology
-inhumane
-lashley
-dismissed mind and mental processes ofc
- only and only observable behaviour
- he claimed that psychology can shoud study what is seen and what can be seen
in can he said that glandular secretions can be studied that would take place in the future
then in a way he shift from one unobservable behaviour to another unobservable behaviour
-introspection as a method was completely dismissed it is indispensable to the study of psychology
- if we dismiss the human mind that makes us human then that reduces psychology to a branch of biology
-wayy to radical
reducing the status of human beings by merely considering them mindless subjects
- verbal report
ab introspection se hatt ke words waali verbal report pe aa gaye - yahan tak keek ne bol diya that human experinces should not be explained by science because that the work of art
