- Explain how muscles work as a pair to bend an straighten the arm at the elbow causing movement at the joint. Make sure you discuss the type of joint movement.
Flexion of a joint is a decrease in the joint angle from the body in anatomic position. When the elbow is bent when the form is flexed which means that the flexor is contracted or has pulled the bone of the forearm. Most election takes place in a forward direction. The exception to this is the leg where flexion of the leg results in the bending of the knee. Extension of the joint is when the joint is returned to anatomical position or increases the angle of the joint, which means extensor is contract. An Example of this is when tried the triceps brachii contracts to straighten the arm. The biceps brachii muscle in the upper arm contracts to bend the elbow. Muscles work in pairs so that at the same time, the biceps brachii muscle contracts to bend the joint and the triceps brachii returns to its original length. To straighten the arm or extend the joint, the triceps brachii contracts while the biceps brachii returns to its original length.
