Waterfalls Flashcards
Waterfalls are found in the
Upper course of the river
How are water falls formed
The river flows over areas of hard rock and soft rock, eroding, soft rock, more quickly than hard rock through abrasion and hydraulic action
The hard rock sticks out, causing a step to form
Overtime, the step will get bigger and the soft rock at the bottom of the Now waterfall is a rooted to form a plunge pool
The soft rock will erode, deeper and backwards undercutting the hard rock
The hard rock above the plunge pool, collapses, and the waterfall moves by creating a gorge
Plunge pool
Hard rock that has collapsed
Over hang
The hard rock hanging over as the soft rock has eroded
Gorge
When the waterfall moves back because the rock above the plunge pool has collapsed leaving steep sides behind
Under cutting
Soft rock being eroded
What happens in the middle stage of the river
The gradient starts to level and the river begins to meander
Meander
Bends in the river
Meanders are slower on the —- — -and quicker on the —-
Inside outside
Meanders can develop into
Ox bow lakes
Water is faster on the
Outside of the meander
On the inner curves water is
Slower
When a river meanders the outer bank is
Eroded
As a river meanders the inner bend
Deposits
Over time the outer bank
Wears away
