Waterfall Flashcards
What is a waterfall
A waterfall is a vertical drop in the course of the river in its youthful stage.

Waterfall formation
• When the river flows over an area where a band of hard rock, such as granite, lies across a band of soft rock, such as sandstone, the soft rock is eroded more quickly than the more resistant hard rock, gradually creating a vertical drop.
• The river falls over the vertical drop as a waterfall.
• This fall increases in size, and the material the river carries (its load) creates a deep pool, known as a plunge pool, at the base. This plunge pool gets bigger over time through the processes of hydraulic action and abrasion.
• The water falling into the plunge pool splashes against the back wall of the waterfall. The process of solution erodes the back wall, undercutting the waterfall and creating an overhang.
• Pressure and the force of gravity eventually cause this overhang to collapse.
• This process repeats itself over time, making the waterfall retreat upstream.
