Q

How will climate change affect the hydrological cycle (6)

A

It’s could cause rain for to decrease which could lead to more droughts in dry areas
Warmer temperatures will result in higher levels of evaporation from the worlds oceans and because of this will lead to more rain fall
There could be increased rainfall which would lead to more surface run-off which will cause the levels of rivers and lakes to rise which can lead to flooding

Q

Explain how intensive agriculture can affect water quality

A
  • Fertiliser from plants can end up in rivers
  • This cause algae to grow on top of the surface of the water
  • This makes the water hold less oxygen so the species in the river suffocate
  • This is called eutrophication

Q

How does deforestation affects water supply (Tanzania)

A

In the Kahama District , North West Tanzania.
In Kaham 80% of people are farmers and because of demand from developed countries for timber and tobacco trees must be cut down for more land without trees surface run-off increases so the levels of rivers and lakes rise so floods are more frequent infiltration has decreased as their are less trees to soak up water. Therefore ground water levels have decreased.
Due to a lack of clean water Cholera and diarrhoea have increased.

Q

How does deforestation affects water supply (India)

A

65% of crop water and 85% of drinking water comes from ground water wells in North West India groundwater levels are falling because more water is taken then returned

Q

What are the benefits of the Hoover Dam?

A

Regular all year water supply for cities like Las Vegas, reservoirs have re-creational uses e.g. boats

Q

What are the costs of the Hoover Dam

A

Loss of land which is flooded by reservoir causing people to have to move home
shrinking sandbanks mean some animals lose habitat

Q

What are the benefits of the Three Gorges Dam

A

The three gorges dam regulates waterflow to meet the domestic and industrial needs of China’s growing population

Decreases the risk of flooding

Q

What are the costs of the Three Gorges Dam

A

Forced 1.4 million people to leave their homes
landslides and bank collapses in settlements mean relocation of 100,000 people
Algae has been recorded along the river which has deoxygenated the water and caused fish to die

Q

What is the impact of climate change on the hydrological cycle

A

Rainfall may become inconsistent and I will arrange for a levels in already dry areas more places could suffer from water insufficiency due to less rainfall.

More of evaporation to take place over oceans more rain bearing storms heavy water inputs into Britain’s drainage basin
Longer, hotter summers
Warmer wetter winters

Q

How does the hydrological cycle work ?

A

It displays of the transfer of water evaporation is when water from the sea is lates or puddles return to the atmosphere in the water for condensation is when water vapour cools down, often becoming visible as cloud. Tiny water droplets collide and grey building bigger job today it’s that for to the ground as rain or snow precipitation some rain for flows over the surface of the ground into rivers and lakes (surface run off)

Sometimes water has time to soak into the soil infiltration the water is then transferred slowly through the soil until it reaches a river once it has entered the soil some water soaks into the rocks below . It moves very slowly through tiny air spaces in the rock called pores.
