Water Waves Flashcards
1
Q
What type of waves are water waves?
A
- Transverse
2. Mechanical
2
Q
What equation do we use to measure the speed of water waves?
A
Wave speed (V) = Frequency (f) x Wavelength (λ)
where:
- wave speed and wavelength are measured in cm
3
Q
What do we use to find the wavelength of water waves?
A
A ripple tank
4
Q
Outline the process of using a ripple tank.
A
- Motor powers oscillating paddle, which moves up and down on surface of shallow pool of water, creating waves
- Illuminating light projects image of waves onto viewing screen.
- Dark straight lines (wavefronts) represent crests of water waves
- Measure mean wavelength by measuring distance across multiple wavefronts
5
Q
Why do we measure across multiple wavelengths?
A
- Lots of wavelengths = more accurate
2. Multiple readings = more reliable
6
Q
Finish the sentence:
“The deeper the water…”
A
The faster the waves travel
