Water treatment Flashcards
7 types of water treatment (in order!)
Screening
Flocculation
Settling/Sedimentation
Filtration
Chlorination
Fluoridation
pH Adjustment
Screening
Water passes through the wire mesh to remove debris
Flocculation
Aluminium sulphate is added to coagulate the molecules to form larger ones
Sedimentation/Settling
The water settles at the bottom and the clear water flows from the top
Filtration
Water passes through sand bed to remove last suspended solids
Chlorination
Chloride is added to kill bacteria, no change to taste
Fluoridation
Fluoride is added to prevent cavities
pH Adjustment
Sulphide acid is added because water is too basic. Too much causes corrosion in pipes. Too much calcium hydroxide causes water hardness
