Water Systems Flashcards
What are 4 properties of water?
It is the only natural substance to be in all states of matter, 0 degrees celsius is water’s freezing point while 100 degrees celsius is water’s boiling point, it has high specific heat, and it has high surface tension which makes it sticky.
What is groundwater?
All the water that has penetrated the earth’s surface and is in one of the two soil layers.
What is Evaporation?
Water is transfered into the atmosphere by becoming a gas.
What is Condensation?
The change of water from gas to a liquid.
What is Transport?
The movement of water through the atmosphere over land and oceans.
What is Precipitation?
Transporting water from the atmosphere back to the surface of the earth.
What is Transpiration?
The Evaporation of water into the atmosphere from the leaves and stems of plants.
What is a Runoff?
The movement of land water to the oceans, in the form of rivers, lakes, and streams
What is a Water Shed?
The land area that drains water towards a common channel or body of water.
What is a Current?
Streams of water that move within a larger body of water.
What is Warm Current?
They flow from tropical areas to colder areas.
Ex. The Gulf Stream
What is Cold Current?
They move from cold areas to tropical areas.
Ex. Labrador Current
What is Convection Current?
Different temperatures in the air or water can cause movement.
