Water Supply Flashcards
Where is there a water surplus?
In the north aka Scotland and Wales
What is water stress?
When the amount of water available doesn’t meet the required amount. Could be due to an inadequate supply or because of poor water quality.
What is water surplus?
Locations where there is more water than needed. Areas with high levels of rainfall but have a relatively small population.
What is a water deficit?
Areas where there is a large population but not enough water required for each individual. Often where there isn’t enough rain.
Name 5 schemes introduced to try and limit the amount of water each individual uses.
1) Hose pipe ban enforced by fining
2) Water metres
3) Campaigns and posters
4) Double flush toilet buttons
5) Rainwater collected
6) Bath water recycled to fit toilets
7) Fix leaking pipes.
7) Take more showers than baths.
Conservation of water
Thoughtful use of resources, managing the landscape in order to protect existing ecosystems and cultural features.
Sustainable
Ensuring the provision of water is long term and that supplies can be maintained without harming the environment.
How can water be transported to the south?
1) via Roman aqueducts from reservoirs.
2) Build a river transfer which changes the flow of water from the north to the south. Severn river in Wales to London.
3) Build reservoirs such as Kielder that can be used for other purposes.
Why was Kielder reservoir built?
To satisfy the expected demand for water in the future.
Where is the Kielder reservoir?
Northumberland, UK
How large is Kielder reservoir?
12km long and 50m high.
Largest man made reservoir in Europe.
Where is there a water deficit?
In the South East of the United Kingdom
How is water transferred from Kielder?
- Aqueducts
- To Airyholm (reservoir)
- To Frosterly
- To Eggleston
Who benefits from Kielder?
- Tyneside
- Cleveland
- Newcastle
- Sunderland
- Durham
- Middlesborough
- Darlington
5 Benefits of Kielder
- Income through tourism
- Reliable water source
- HEP power
- River downstream from dam now not likely to flood local villages
- New habitats created in woodland around reservoir.
- New jobs created
