Water Supply Flashcards
Sources of Water
- Rain
- Land Surface
- Ground Water
is a relatively unimportant source of water
Rain
water obtained from the land surface originates from rain water
Examples: Impounded Reservoirs, Rivers and Streams, Tanks and Sea Water
Surface Water
is the cheapest and most practical source of water
Example: well and springs
Ground Water
Advantages
a. Free from pathogenic agent
b. Usually requires no treatment
c. Supply from deep wells is likely to be certain even in dry season
Disadvantages
a. May have high mineral content
b. Requires pumping out of the water source
Contamination of Water
a. At the source itself
b. By the addition of impurities during transit from source to reservoir
c. During distribution through cracks and joints pipes
d. When water is stored in underground or overhead storage tanks
e. Unclean containers are dipped in the water container
f. Unclean glasses are used to serve
Hazardous of Water Pollutions
Biological Hazards
Chemical Hazards
water-borne diseases ca be caused by ineffective agents by the consumption that could be present, examples: viruses. Bacteria, protozoa
Biological Hazards
pollutants derived from industrial and agricultural wasted, for examples: detergents, solvents, heavy metals
Chemical Hazards
How to keep the water safe to use?
- Purification
- Chlorination
- Boiling
the process of extracting some substance present in the water
Purification
A step in large scale purification of water which supplements sand filtration
Chlorination
kills pathogenic bacteria but has no spores and certain viruses except in high doses
Chlorine
water must be boiled vigorously for 5-10 minutes
