Water Stuff π Flashcards
what is buoyancy?
the upward supportive force on an object in a fluid. the buoyant force equals the weight of water being displaced by the object
why is liquid water more dense than ice?
liquid water is more dense than ice because itβs particles are more closely packed
why does oil float on top of water? how do you clean it up?
oil is less dense than water, so it floats on top of the surface. you clean it up with floating booms which encircle the oil and scoop/ suck it up
explain the density of water
fluids become more dense as they cool because the particles move slower and are closer together. when it gets to 0β’ they move further apart, and the volume increases so it turns into ice
how do you find volume by displacement?
place object you want the volume of in a measuring cup full of water, take note of the water level before and after its in. the volume is the amount the after went up by
what is a hydrometer?
tests the density of various liquids
