Water Soluble Vitamins Flashcards
carbohydrate metabolism
seen in the nervous system and heart, sometimes as Beri-Beri (weakened and tender muscles and heart dysfunction)
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
involved in red blood cell (RBC) development
essential for growth, and important for hair, skin, and nails
seen as changes in the skin, such as chapped lips
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
important for skin, nerves, and the digestive tract
can be used to treat some types of hyperlipidemia
can cause Pellagra (dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia)
Vitamin B3 (Niacin or Nicotinic Acid)
metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat
leads to fatigue, sleep disturbance, and impaired coordination
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
assists in the regeneration of red blood cells
needed to synthesize neurotransmitters
is a coenzyme in protein metabolism
can cause peripheral neuropathy, muscle twitching, and convulsions
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
involved in the synthesis of amino acids and fatty acids
helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat
is rare and usually only if long term antibiotic use alters the intestinal flora
Vitamin B7 (Biotin)
needed for red blood cell production
used before conception and during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects
can cause anemia and in pregnancy can lead to birth defects
Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid or Folate or Folacin)
involved in the synthesis of RNA and DNA
involved in the formation of healthy red blood cells
needed for maintenance of nerves and tissues
pernicious anemia
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)
essential for tooth and bone formation, healthy gums, formation of collagen, resistance to infections, and wound healing
antioxidant
maintains the body’s resistance to infection
deficient collagen formation: bumps and small hemorrhages around hair follicles, spongy gums, and bleeding mucous membranes
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
