water quality Flashcards
definition : The chemical biological and physical status of a body of water
water quality
definition : Pollution that can be traced to one source
Point source pollution
definition : Cannot be traced to one source
nonpoint source pollution
definition : Measure of water’s cloudiness
Turbidity
definition : Strong acids harming aquatic plants/animals
acidity
definition : An organism that is sensitive to environmental conditions and as one of the first responder changes
Bioindicator
definition : A nitrogen base compound often use it fertilizers
nitrate
Defintion; the collection of data from a distance
Remote sensing
Three main things that affect water quality
Seasonal temperature changes, weathering of rocks/soil, and Human activities such as pollution
Three examples of point source pollution
Factories, sewage treatment plants, And combined sewer overflow (cso)
1 Example of non-point source pollution
Run off from larger areas such as roads, cities, lawns
Specific characteristics of water are described by its water quality…Why are they important?
Characteristics such as the amount of oxygen and nutrients in the water the type in number of organisms living in the water and the amount of sediment in the water all of these characteristics are important to the health of aquatic organisms
What is the amount of dissolved oxygen and water important?
It provides oxygen for the fish. If there’s two little oxygen, fish die
How can water temperature affect the amount of oxygen dissolved in water?
Higher water temperature is hold less dissolved oxygen lower water temperatures hold more dissolved oxygen.
Turbidity ___________When floaters______________
increase, increase
