Water: Pollution Flashcards
Dissolved Oxygen
Enriches the water with plant nutrients
Aerobic Oxidation
Occurs in the presence of dissolved oxygen.
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
Amount of oxygen needed for this degradation of organic wastes.
Eutrophication
After algae die, they become organic waste and increase the BOD.
Anaerobic Decay
When too much organic matter depletes the dissolved oxygen in a body of water.
Primary Sewage Treatment
Removes some of the solids as sludge.
Secondary Sewage treatment
Plant passes effluent from the primary treatment facility through sand and gravel filters
Activated Sludge Method
A combination of primary and secondary treatment methods, the sewage is place in tanks and aerated with large blowers.
Advanced Treatment
Charcoal filtration; Reverse osmosis; Very expensive.
