Mouth
The point where the river comes to the end, usually when entering the sea.
Catchment area
The area within the drainage basin.
Depostion
When a river slows down has less energy it dropped his load.
Confluence
The point at which two rivers or steams join up.
Erosion
The wearing away where the land or soil, by the action of wind, water and ice.
Tributary
A stream or smaller river which joins a larger stream or river.
Watershed
The edge of highland surrounding a drainage basin. It marks the boundary between two drainage basins.
Drainage basin
The area of the land drained by a river.
Transportation
The movement of material down a river.
Hydraulic action
The sheer force of the water hitting the banks and the bed.
Abrasion (sandpaper)
When the load (material) the river is carrying repeat hits and rubs against the banks and bed, causing material to break off or wear away.
Attriction
When rocks crash together which then weakens them and eventually breaking them into smaller pieces.
Solution
Small pieces of (certain) material ( e.g. Limestone, chalk) dissolve into the water.
Transportation
