Water Molds: Oomycetes Flashcards
Water Molds(oomycetes)
Live in freshwater(Lakes, wetlands, rivers, wet soils);Have mobile spores; Chemoorganoheterotrophs(but more specifically Osmotrophs)
Mobile Spores
reproductive propagules that swim; Thus, REQUIRE WATER FOR SUCCESSFUL REPRODUCTION
Chemoorganoheterotrophs
use dead/living organic matter for energy and carbon
Osmotrophs
release enzymes from their cells that digest (break down) organic matter OUTSIDE of the actual organism (EXTERNAL DIGESTION); Once enzymes have done their job, osmotrophs absorb products of digestion across cell membranes
Equivalent of spitting on donut that is enzymes that break down the donut, then smack down the donut with hand to absorb it
Examples of Water Molds
Phytphthora infestans and Pythium insdiosum
Can cause root rot in plants, like rhodendron
Phytphthora infestans
Water mold that caused the Irish Potato blight and Irish Potato Famine; Lead to starvation, death, and many Irish folks moving to North America
Pythium insdiosum
Affects mammals, particularly horses, dogs; Disease, OFTEN DEADLY, caused by water molds; In news recently due to outbreak in Chincoteague ponies
(Euthanized from damage of pathogen, Dogs being exposed to water)
