Q

Frontal rainfall

A

This rain occurs when a warm front meets a cold front. The heavier cold air sinks to the ground while the warm air rises above it. When the warm air rises it cools. The cool air condenses and forms cloud. The clouds bring precipitation.

Q

Orographic rainfall

A

This rain occurs when mountains block the path of a movement of air horizontally. The air mass is forced to move upwards. The air cools and condenses forming clouds which rain heavily on the windward side (Great Dividing Range). The clouds lose their moisture, the further inland they travel. This is what creates a Rain shadow effect on the leeward side (GDR).

Q

Convectional rainfall

A

This rain occurs when the energy of the sun heats the surface of the Earth, causing air molecules to rise. Eventually they condense into clouds forming rain.
