Water EQ 1 Flashcards
% of water that is fresh
2.5%
Largest store of fresh water
Glaciers
What factors drive the hydrological cycle?
Solar energy and gravitational potential energy
How does the thermohaline circulation work?
- Water in the polar is saltier and dense so will sink
- As cold water sinks warmer tropic water is drawn in
- As warm water moves away colder deep water moves up and is warmed
Is the volume of fresh water increasing or decreasing and why?
Decreasing as the freshwater stored in glaciers and ice sheets is melting and joining saline water
Define closed system
Where the inputs and outputs are in balance
Where is most of freshwater locked
Cryosphere
Definite open system
- water can enter and exit the system
- total volume of the water varies
3 types of rainfall
- orographic rainfall
- conventional rainfall
- frontal rainfall
Human factors on a drainage basin
- overabstration
- deforestation
- urbanisation
- reservoirs
Define water budget
Reflects the differences between inputs and outputs
Define effective rainfall
Amount of precipitation remaining after evaporation
2 types of river regimes
- simple
- complex
Define hydrograph
A graph showing the discharge of a river in a given time period
How does geology affect a drainage basin?
- changes rate of percolation
- can affect soil formation
Changes to groundwater flow
