Water Cycle process Flashcards
What is precipitation?
Any form of moisture that falls on earth
What is evaporation?
From liquid to gas
What is condensation?
From gas to liquid
What is sublimation?
From solid to gas
What is interception?
Precipitation being caught and stored by natural and artificial objects above the surface
What is surface runoff?
Unconfined flow of water over the surface
What is infiltration?
Water infuses into the subsurface
What is throughflow?
Sporadic horizontal flow of water within the soil layer
What is percolation?
Water flows down through the soil layer (vertical)
What is Groundwater flow?
Movement of water through subsurface layers
What is transpiration?
Loss of water from vegetation through stomata on their surface
What is evapotranspiration?
Total amount of water from drainage basin back into the atmosphere.
How do seasonal changes in UK affect water cycle (Precipitation, evaporation, vegetation)?
Precipitation: In winter, snow will delay availability of water until melt. Summer, less precipitation.
Evaporation: In winter, evaporation rate is reduced. Vice-versa for summer.
Define water abstraction?
Process of taking water from natural resources and useit for irrigation, drinking water
How do land use change impact water cycle?
Urbanized landscape increase impermeable surface, which increase surface runoff and reduced infiltration, ledaing to flooding risks.
How do farming impact water cycle?
Extracting water for irrigation can cause groundwater depletion and pollution through chemical runoff. Excess irrigation will lead to nutrient loss in soil, drip irrigation will help reduce water use.
