Water cycle Flashcards
What percentage of all living organisms is made up of by water
65-95 %
What do plants use water for
photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration
what is photosynthesis
combining co2 sunlight an water to make glucoses and starch
What is respiration
converting glucose to energy releasing c02
what percentage of water is stored in oceans
97%
What is the water balance
Summarises the flows of water in a drainage basin
What are the principle 8 flows of water
Precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, run-off(overland flow), infiltration, percolation and throughflow, stem flow
What is throughflow
Movement of water horizontally beneath the surface usually when soil is completely saturated
What is the difference between percolation and infiltration
Infiltration is the downward movement of water whilst Percolation id the movement of water through soil and porous rock
What is stem flow
Water runs down the trees stem or bole to the ground surface
Factors that effect interception loss
Interception storage capacity - as saturation of vegetation increases then more stem flow increases so less water is retained on leaves
Wind speed - Rates of evaporation increases with wind speed so less water is absorbed
Vegetation type - interception losses are greater from agricultural crops and grasses then trees due to surface area
Interception losses are greater from evergreens then from deciduos trees as they have needle leaves so water adheres to them more so the water is more likely to evaporate
