water cycle Flashcards
evaporation
sun warms the warm bodies of water causing it to evaporate
transpiration
water in the soil gets absorbed by the roots and it travels to the leaves of a plant. (plants lose water vapour from the small pores on the underside of their leaves.)
condensation
the cooler temp of the upper atmosphere and particles of dust cause water vapour to condense into clouds.
precipitation
anything liquid or frozen that falls out of the sky. (rain, hail, snow)
run off
when there is more water than land can absorb then force of gravity pulls water downhill. (rivers, streams, ground water,). surface water run off (excess rain water, seasonal melting)
infiltration
water seeps into the soil and percolates deeper into the ground forming the water table. (ground matter, aquifers)
collection
water from precipitation and run off makes their way back to bodies of water (oceans, lakes, glaciers)
