Water Cycle Flashcards
Water Cycle
the continuous process by which water is circulated throughout the earth and the atmosphere through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and the transpiration of plants and animals.
Evaporation
process where liquids change to a gas or vapor.
Condensation
opposite of evaporation- takes place when water vapor in the air
condenses from a gas, back to liquid form, and leaves the atmosphere, returning to the
surface of the Earth in the form of clouds.
Precipitation
the liquid and water particles that fall from clouds to reach the ground
(drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, snow pellets, ice crystals, hail).
Water Vapor
The gas state of water. Develops during evaporation.
Runoff
water from rain, snowmelt, or other sources that flows from the land surface
back into the ocean or underground into aquifers and is a major component of the water
cycle.
Transpiration
water that evaporates from the leaves of plants
