Water Cycle Flashcards
What are the 4 main water systems on earth?
Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere, Biosphere.
What is a closed system?
A system that transfers energy but not matter across its boundary into the surrounding environment.
What is an open system?
Energy and matter can cross its boundary into the surrounding environment.
Where does most energy in a system come from?
The sun.
Give an input, output store and flow of a coastal system.
Input: River
Store: Beach
Flow: Waves
Output: Sea
Define Dynamic Equilibrium.
Systems with small variations in input/output but remain balanced overall. (If there is long-term change a new equilibrium is made.)
Define positive feedback.
Feedback that amplifies change.
Define negative feedback.
Feedback that moderates change.
What are the components of the hydrosphere?
Oceanic and terrestrial water.
What are the main water stores on earth?
Hydrosphere
Lithosphere
Atmosphere
Cryosphere
Give examples of cryospheric water stores.
Permafrost, glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, icebergs, ice caps.
How much of earths freshwater is stored in ice sheets?
> 90%
Give examples of terrestrial water stores.
Groundwater, biological water, soil, wetlands, lakes, rivers.
How much of earths surface is covered by the oceanic store?
72%
What is Fusion?
Solid -> liquid
