Water Cycle Flashcards
What is sublimation?
A solid becomes a gas.
What is evaporation?
Liquid becomes a vapor.
What is condensation?
A gas (vapor) becomes a liquid.
What is transpiration?
Plants give off water vapor through openings in their leaves (stomata).
What is precipitation? Give examples.
Water that falls to the earth as hail, mist, rain, sleet, or snow.
What is runoff?
Runoff happens when there is more water than land can absorb. The excess liquid flows across the surface of the land and into nearby creeks, streams, or ponds.
What is groundwater?
Groundwater is water that comes from the ground. It is a source of drinking water and also a major source of water for irrigation (watering plants).
What is deposition in the water cycle?
Deposition occurs when. Water vapor changes state directly from a. gas to a solid.
What role does vegetation play in the water cycle?
Through transpiration, plants release water into the atmosphere that evaporate.
What is vegetation?
Plant life or cover (as of an area)
Your water bottle is filled with cold water. You notice after some time that droplets begin to form on the outside. What is this called? What is the cause?
Condensation.
When water that is in the form of gas in the atmosphere comes in contact with the cold water bottle, molecules bind together to make water droplets, turning a gas back into a solid.
What role do animals and people play in the water cycle?
Animals release water through transpiration, urine, and respiration.
Explain the water cycle.
The water cycle shows the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere. It is a complex system that includes many different processes. Liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, and precipitates back to earth in the form of rain and snow.
