Water as a Resource Flashcards
What is a natural resource?
Raw material that occur in the environment and which are useful to people.
Examples of renewable resources:
Water, forests and soils
What resources are significantly affected by human activity?
Forests and water
What are two problems that people face with natural resources are:
Access and supply
Is water a renewable resource? Explain.
Yes. It is constantly being recycled thought the water cycle.
Name places where water would of been in the same place the longest.
Arctic ice sheets, groundwater, glaciers, oceans and large lakes.
What is a renewable resource?
A resource that can be replaced in a short period of time.
Provide your own example to show how the water cycle works.
An animal drinks water, urinates out of the soil. Soil absorbs the water and then it evaporates from the soil. The water condenses and turns into precipitation. It rains, water gets into water tanks and back into an animal’s body.
What is ground water?
Water below the Earth’s surface
What does permeable mean?
Allowing liquids or gases to pass through
What is groundwater recharge?
A process in which water moves down from the Earth’s surface into the groundwater
What is blue water?
Water in freshwater lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. It is fresh water
What is green water?
Water that is stored in the soil or in vegetation
What is run-off?
Precipitation not absorbed by soil
What is a non-renewable resource?
A resource changed over a long period of time
