Water and carbon systems Flashcards
Example of a positive feedback in a system
Global temp rise, Increased oceanic temp, Dissolved CO2 released by warmer oceans, More CO2 in atmosphere.
Example of a negative feedback in a system
Increased use of fossil fuels, Increase atmospheric CO2, More plant growth, Reduces atmospheric CO2 and temp.
What is an isolated system ?
These have no interactions with anything outside the system boundary - there is no input or output of energy or matter.
What is a closed system ?
These have transfers of energy both into and beyond the system but not transfer or matter. No input but there is outputs.
What is an open system ?
Receive inputs and outputs
How is the Amazon an open system ?
Absorbs solar energy, which drives photosynthesis, evaporation, and climate interactions.
Water, carbon, nutrients, and organisms move in and out of the system.
How is the river eden an open system ?
It receives inputs ; precipitation and solar energy
It has processes ; Infiltration, Run-off etc
It has outputs ; River discharge, Evaporation
