Water and Carbon Flashcards
1
Q
Changes in carbon cycle due to carbon sequestration
A
- Human activity affects the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere by plants and trees
- These sinks of CO2 affect the carbon cycle by decreasing the amount of CO2 in the air
2
Q
Relationship between water and carbon cycle
A
- Carbon cycle moves atmospheric carbon into plants - then animals do the same when they consume plants.
- Water provides things needed for plants to photosynthesise & remove CO2
Oceans - carbon sink
Animals - exhale CO2
3
Q
Human interventions in the carbon cycle to influence carbon transfers
A
*Bio-energy with carbon capture
*Enhanced weathering
*Direct air capture when combined with storage
4
Q
Human interventions in the carbon cycle to mitigate the impacts of climate change
A
*Reduce flow of heat - trapping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
*Reducing : burning fossil fuels
stop enhancing the ‘sinks’ that accumulate and store these gases
5
Q
Carbon budget
A
- The measure of carbon that’s stored and transferred within the carbon cycle
- Measures the carbon stored against that that’s going out
- Most carbon is stored in the crust and ocean
- Lets scientists calculate how much CO2 can add to the earths atmosphere
6
Q
How does deforestation change the carbon budget
A
- INCREASE in temperature
- Soil turns into sand
- INCREASE in carbon from cutting trees down
7
Q
Impacts of the carbon budget
A
- Gases (CO2 and methane) absorb long wave radiation and warm the earth which allows life to exist on earth
- INCREASED emissions from anthropogenic activities have increased concentration of greenhouse gases
↘️More effective in trapping radiation
↘️enhanced greenhouse effect
8
Q
Carbon budget impact on CLIMATE
A
- Vegetation removes CO2 and releases water and oxygen
- Regions with dense vegetation ➡️ high rates of photosynthesis and respiration
↘️ Increases humidity levels & cloud cover affecting regional temperature and rainfall
