Water and Air Flashcards
1
Q
Why is water important?
A
- Maintains cell hydration
- Assists in the removal of toxins, sweat, tears, urine and faeces
- Major component of bodily fluids e.g. cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid, cytoplasm, and blood plasma
2
Q
What is osmosis?
A
The passive movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane to a higher concentration of solutes
3
Q
Why is osmosis important?
A
Important for cellular function as it allows water and other dissolved fluids to move across a semi-permeable membrane. It is also important as water needs to move in and out of our body cells to maintain equilibrium of solutes and fluids.
4
Q
Osmosis when dehydrated
A
Water moves into waste cells that have entered kidney tubules for elimination
