Water Flashcards
explain how hydrogen bonds occur between water molecules
-water is a polar molecule
-slightly negative water atoms attract slightly positively charged hydrogen atoms of other water molecules
explain 5 properties of water that are important in biology
•Metabolite- used in condensation/ hydrolysis/photosynthesis/ respiration
•Solvent- allows metabolic reactions to occur and allows transport of substances
•High specific heat capacity- can gain and lose heat and energy withough temperature changes – good habitat for aquatic organisms, allows organisms to maintain a constant internal body temperature
•High latent heat of vaporisation- affective cooling via evaporation so helps organisms maintain a constant internal body temperature
•strong cohesion between water molecules -supports columns of water like a transpiration stream through xylem and produces surface tension
