Define gravitational water. Is it available for plants?
No, it moves downwards under the force of gravity. Drainage water.
What is capillary water? Is it available for plants?
Yes. It moves on any direction from wet to dry.
Define hydroscopic water and is it available to plants?
No, it’s held so tightly around soil particles plants can’t get to it.
What is the term used when pore spaces are filled with water (no air)
Saturation
What is field capacity?
The maximum amount of water held in soil against the force of gravity
What is infiltration?
Water entering the surface
What is water repellence caused by?
A fungus producing a waxy build up on soil particles.
What causes a perched water table?
When fine textures soils sit on top of a courser texture. When free natural drainage is prevented and water banks up.
What are some signs of water logging?
Puddling, bad smells, plants dying, mosses algae and reed growth.
What does the term hydrophobic mean?
A soil is unable to absorb water.
