Water Flashcards
What Is Cohesion?
Water Sticking to water
What is Adhesion?
Water sticking to other substances
What is Surface Tension?
Something not falling in water when standing on it
Ex.lizard running across water and not falling in.
What is Capillary Action?
the movement of a liquid through or along another material against an opposing force, such as gravity.
Ex. A plant getting its water from its roots.
What is High specific Heat capacity?
the specific heat capacity of a substance
Ex. A fish living in a pond because the temperature of the water stays the same the whole year(very little fluctuation in temp)
What is a Solvent
which is capable of dissolving one or several substances, thus creating a solution.
Ex. Water is a Solvent because it dissolves substances like salt.
What is a Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
Ex. Salt is a Solute because it dissolves in liquid
What does hydrophobic mean?
It hates water
What does hydrophilic mean?
It loves water
What part of a water molecule is positive?
Hydrogen
What part of a water molecule is negative?
Oxagen
What is a molecule?
two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds or A group of atoms grouped together
Why is a water molecule polar?
A water molecule becomes polar when it has an unequal sharing of electrons between the atoms.
What is known as the Universal Solvent?
Water
What does a PH scale indicate?
How acidic something is
What is an acid?
An acid is something that is below seven on the PH scale
What is a base?
A base is something that is above seven on the PH scale
What is the basic unit of matter?
The basic unit of matter is an atom
What is inside the Nucleus of an Atom?
Protons and Neutrons
What is the charge and location of a proton?
The charge is positive and it is located inside the nucleus
What is the charge and location of a neutron?
The charge is neutral and it is located inside the nucleus
What is the charge and location of an electron?
The charge is negative and it’s located outside the nucleus
What is an Element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Ex. No matter how much you break down gold it’s still gon be gold.
What does the Atomic number of a number represent?
It shows the amount of protons
