Waste Water treatment Flashcards
What are the 3 places there can be waste water from and examples
Domestic - showers
Agricultural - nutrient run off/animal feces
Industrial - chemical from factories
What two things do we do with waste water
treat it so it can be:
reused
replaced into natural water sources
What is the first step in treating waste water
screening to remove the large solids in the waste water
After screening where does the waste water go
It goes into the primary sedimentation tank where organic waste sinks to bottom and lighter part stays on top
What are the names given to the heavier part and lighter part of the waste in primary sedimentation tank
heavy = sludge
light = effluent
Once the slude and effluent parts are seperated what happens differently in their treatment
In sludge it is sealed away and bacteria anaerobically digest sludge
In effluent bacteria aerobically digest harmful microbes whilst O2 is pumped in
After sludge is anaerobically digested what happens to it
methane produced is used for fuel
rest is used as fertiliser
After effluent is aerobically digested what happens to it
final settling tank gets rid of bacteria then it’s slung back into nature
