Any waste needing to be managed due to potential harm to the environment or human health. Categorised into household, commercial and industrial waste.

Contains harmful substances posing risk to health and the environment e.g. chemicals, batteries and certain electronic waste.

Through proper disposal including composting, incineration and anaerobic digestion. Ensure does not contaminate soil or water sources.
What does offensive waste refer to?
Not classified as hazardous by may cause discomfort or offence to people.
E.g. non-clinical items contaminated with bodily fluids.
What is bio hazardous waste? How is it managed?
Includes materials contaminated with pathogens that can cause disease, such as waste from laboratories or animal facilities.
Managed through incineration, chemical treatment or sterilisation.
How is hazardous waste disposed of? What are the implications if disposed of incorrectly?
Through specialised processes such as incineration, chemical treatment or landfill in designated areas.
Incorrect disposal can lead to environmental contamination, health risks to humans and wildlife, and legal penalties.
How are clinical and bio hazardous waste managed differently?
Clinical waste typically treated through sterilisation or incineration, while bio hazardous requires specific handling and disposal methods to prevent disease spread.
What is the consequence of not managing waste properly in the animal industry?
Severe health risks, environmental damage, and potential disease outbreaks of disease amongst animal populations.
