Waste Management Flashcards
What is waste management?
Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal of waste materials.
When did the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules 2000 came into effect?
January 2004
Describe solid waste disposal.
Solid waste is the solid and semi solid material which is generated from human and animal activities.
What is segregation?
Segregation refers to the separation of waste into different categories of waste.
What is Dumping?
Dumping is an activity of depositting waste in an area.
Define composting.
Composting is a method of solid waste disposal and it requires time and patience. The waste is not only decomposed but fertilizer is also made by natural process.
Tell in brief about incineration.
Another method of solid waste disposal is its reduction in weight and volume. This method is called incineration. Modern machines used in this process are called in incinerators . In the incinerator the waste is burned and gets reduced by 90% in weight and volume.
A steel mill may release how much litres of water for every ton of steel manufactured.
5000 to 150000
What type of waste is separated in grit chamber?
Inorganic and organic matter.
What is the size of the particles of inorganic matter?
0.2 mm or more
What chemicals are added in coagulation process?
Aluminium sulphate and ferric chloride
How much percent of solid matter is removed by sedimentation
80%
Define flotation
It is an alternative of the sedimentation process in which the air is forced into the waste water. The pressure is maintained due to which the waste water then becomes supersaturated with air. It is then discharged into an open tank where rising bubbles are formed which bring up the suspended particles to the surface where they are easily removed.
What is digestion?
Digestion is a microbiological process in which the organic sludge is converted into methane, carbon dioxide and humus like material. This reaction occurs in a closed anaerobic tank known as digester.
Telling in brief about septic tank.
It is a common method in which a tank is used to treat the domestic sewage only. It is a concrete or metal tank with a submerged outlet. In this tank the solid waste settles and floatable material rises. A liquid stain flows through the submerged outlet and per college down to the soil. The floating matter and settled solids can remain there for about a year also and get decomposed anaerobically.
