Waste fires Flashcards
Metals such as lithium, sodium, magnesium and aluminium, oxidize rapidly in the presence of air or moisture. If this occurs they may generate enough heat to reach their spontaneous ignition temperature. If left unchecked the generated heat will increase and once the and once the fire point is reached they will burn uncontrollably. At this point copious amounts of water, CO2 or dry powder should be applied? True or False
False
Name control measure for landfill sites?
Where process plant and equipment is involved consult occupiers for guidance regarding isolation of equipment
Cordon off any high risk areas such as steep slopes and dangerous plant machinery in the risk area
Establish if the fire is deep seated (beware of voids created by under burning where large quantities of refuse are involved)
Strategic positioning of hose reel, jets or monitors to prevent to prevent fire spread and use of appropriate extinguishing medium.
What is leachate?
Any liquid that in the course of passing through matter, extracts soluble or suspended solids, or any other component of the material
Running fuel fire may occur at a waste fire, what is a tactic for tackling a running fuel fire?
Create a small bunded wall from suitable waste from the site may control and contain the fire
What is capping?
Covering the waste with with 2 meters of soil, sand and sometimes grass
How should scrap metal be fire be extinguished?
Should be isolated (created fire breaks or stops)
Use dry sand, dry earth, powered granite,
Be allowed to burn out or smothered
Observation of the waste surface should be maintained to spot dipping. What would this indicate?
May indicate subsidence and possible collapse into unidentified voids
What % of gases in landfill gas are made up of methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide?
5 - 15%
What temperature can refuse derided fuel spontaneously combust?
40 degrees
