. It was an association of 39 states that had a shared culture, language, etc and aimed to bring together the german people into a united union.
. The benifits were economic through trade, militarily and culturally.

Why was there a rivalry between Prussia and Austria within the German confederation.

A

Both countries wanted to become the leader of the germanic people. In 1815 Austria was the strongest country because it had an aspire in a lot of eastern Europe. Prussia was less powerful but was becoming more and more ambitious. Prussia believed a small Germany should be created in a few new kingdoms.

The Zollverein is a customs union with a number of members from the german confederation so that they could have free trade. Reasons: 1. economic advantage 2. more power as a leader 3. limit Austrian power

A

The enlightenment was an age of reason which challenged the accepted forms of power. People wanted more countries to protect and award them with freedom. Nationalism is Germany being united.
