- French army of 20 thousand versus 40 thousand Austrians
- Saved from defeat by the arrival of extra troops by general Dasaix

- Combined with marengo forced Austrian to withdraw
- Led by general Moreau who was later accused of the royalist assassination attempt

- After 9 years of fighting Britain was ready to leave
- France forced to return the papal states & Nepal in return for British returning Egypt to the ottoman empire
- Marked a high point in napoleon’s career
- Now secure and popular a home after securing peace with the 2nd coalitions coinciding with him making himself consul for life
- Helped to balance the budget
- However peace with Britain is short lived
