HUMANS warm up by wearing clothes, exercising, burning fuel in fireplaces. cool off by sweating and using air conditioners or fans in homes
ANIMALS birds fly south when it’s cold in northern regions, snakes and lizards lie in the sun. to cool off dogs pant, bees flap their wings .
how heating and cooling of our homes have changed over time
USED TO burn wood in fireplaces, plant shade trees, places blinds on windows. cooled houses by running river water through walls, air conditioners were used in 1900s.
NOW homes have built in heating/cooling systems.
why we have chimneys
wood, coal, oil, etc release energy and gases as waste when burned.
some are toxic and need to be removed from building.
chimneys are vents that carry these gases into the air outside.
